General information about the island of Maui.

Maui:  The Valley Isle
Maui is the second largest Hawaiian Island.  It is 727 square miles and has a population of 118,000 people. Three additional islands create Maui County.  The three islands of Lana’i, Kaho’olawe, and Molokai’i can be seen in the distance from South Maui and West Maui. These islands create views on Maui that are unparalleled throughout the pacific. It is nicknamed "The Valley Isle" because each side of the island has volcanoes, which creates a valley in the center. Haleakala is Maui's famous volcano located on the east side of the island. On the other side are the West Maui Mountains.

Climate
Weather varies by island areas and the time of year.  When packing for your trip to Maui, bring a variety of clothing.  While Maui boasts the most comfortable climate in the world (perfect for shorts and t-shirts) if you want to travel to Haleakala or upcountry, you'll need a jacket or a sweatshirt. The top of Haleakala can get snow in January, and it's cold year round.
